The benefits of the Myobrace appliance for children

At Virginia Biological Dentistry, we know how essential it is to be aware of upcoming dental work that may need to be done for a child. While orthodontics is common in teenagers, there is another way to reduce or prevent the need for braces in the future. Often, we recommend using a preventative, pre-orthodontic appliance known as Myobrace.
What is the Myobrace treatment, and how does it work?
The Myobrace treatment is an extraoral appliance that is worn for a certain number of hours throughout the day/night and is removed for eating and brushing. There are no wires or braces to wear with this appliance, but instead a special mouthguard-like device. It is designed for children between the ages of five to eight years old who have unilateral crossbite (one side only). The appliance moves certain teeth into ideal positions without removing teeth through dental extraction procedures. The Myobrace uses expansion, rotation, and counterclockwise pressure to open space for overcrowded teeth to help guide your child’s permanent adult teeth into place. This may help reduce or even eliminate future orthodontic work, making it a highly desirable option for parents of young children with overcrowding and other bite alignment concerns.
What are the benefits of the Myobrace treatment for children?
- It helps alleviate future orthodontic needs without removing adult, permanent teeth
- It is a non-invasive treatment that guides adult teeth to erupt in proper places
- It does not require metal brackets and wires to be glued onto the teeth’s surfaces
- Improves bite alignment as the adult teeth erupt in the jaw
- It is easy to use and take care of, ensuring better oral health throughout treatment
