Dentist Examines the Teeth of Patient, Richmond Family Dentistry
Holistic, or biological, dental care is an overarching approach that respects the intimate relationship of your mouth to every other aspect of your wellbeing – physical, emotional, and spiritual. Does that sound like a West Coast style of dentistry? Its roots are in ancient Ayurvedic medicine, and it is available near you in the care of Richmond, VA dentist, Dr. Olivia Hart.

Mercury safe: A core concept

Since the 1800s, amalgam fillings have been a go-to treatment for tooth decay in this country. The silver-colored metal alloy is relatively easy for the dentist to work with, and it is durable. It also contains about 50 percent mercury.

At Richmond Family Dentistry, we place no amalgam fillings, instead using biocompatible, non-metal composite resins. These modern materials:
  • Are strong enough even for molars.
  • Blend beautifully with natural dentition.
  • Resist stains.
  • Are gentle to opposing teeth.
  • Require less removal of healthy tooth structure.

The mercury safe aspect of the practice comes into play if an old filling fractures, or if a patient requests that we remove existing amalgam. Simply grinding amalgam out releases mercury vapor that can be inhaled, ingested, and absorbed. Dr. Hart and her team adhere to strict guidelines set forth by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology for safe removal of amalgam. The procedure addresses many facets of protection for the patient, staff, and environment.
